L'iscrizione graffita sull'oinochoe del Dipylon rappresenta la più antica attestazione di alfabeto greco rinvenuta in Attica e una delle prime testimonianze di poesia scritta (cf. qui la Coppa di Nestore). Le particolarità paleografiche hanno fatto dubitare dell'identità Attica del suo esecutore, ma possono spiegarsi come segni di una pratica non ancora standardizzata. Maggiori incertezze nell'incisione e un peggiore stato di conservazione rendono difficile e non univoca la lettura della parte finale; nel tempo sono state avanzate le proposte più diverse, con disaccordo sul contenuto e la completezza dell'iscrizione, e anche sulla presenza di un unico incisore (alcuni pensano all'intervento di una seconda mano inesperta, che avrebbe tentato di seguire la prima, abbandonando presto la difficile scrittura poetica per tracciare parte di un abecedario). Quello che è certo è che le prime 35 lettere restituiscono un esametro perfetto, che mostra come il suo autore (da non identificare necessariamente con l'incisore) avesse un'indubbia padronanza della dizione epica (molti i confronti con Omero), pur rivelando la sua identità Attica; le 12 lettere seguenti conservano probabilmente l'inizio di un secondo esametro, la cui trascrizione fu interrotta (segue uno spazio vuoto di 4-6 lettere). Con la solennità del metro, viene annunciato il premio per la vittoria in un agone di danza: il vaso stesso.
