Il superscritto dell’iscrizione è l’unica parte superstite del testo originariamente inciso sulla pietra che fu rinvenuta ad Atene. Esso doveva precedere un trattato di alleanza tra Ateniesi ed Etoli che si data usualmente all’anno 323/2 a.C. Sebbene non si conoscano i termini esatti di questa alleanza, la critica sostiene comunemente, sulla base delle fonti letterarie, che i contatti diplomatici tra Atene ed Etolia fossero stati avviati in segreto già prima del decesso di Alessandro Magno, ma che dopo questo avvenimento ripresero alla luce del sole portando alla stipulazione dell'accordo in questione. L’alleanza ha indiscutibilmente una funzione antimacedone.

Apparatus

2 φιλία Ἰλ̣λ̣[υρίων] Lambert su pietra vede traccia di una ι e, forse, di un doppio lambda posto direttamente al di sopra della prima α e suggerisce di sciogliere questi elementi come parte del genitivo plurale Ἰλ̣λ̣[υρίων].
