| Abstract (max. 650 characters with spaces included) | L’iscrizione, assai frammentaria, restituisce i lacerti di un decreto in cui si sancisce l’invio di navi ateniesi in Sicilia presso l’accampamento dei generali cartaginesi Annibale e Imilcone, con i quali si sarebbe ratificato un trattato di alleanza. Nel testo del decreto, infatti, i Cartaginesi sono ricordati come benefattori e uomini benemeriti, il che lascia supporre, nonostante il silenzio delle fonti letterarie in merito, che tra le due comunità fossero intercorsi rapporti diplomatici, tra il 409 e il 407, molto probabilmente in prospettiva dell’attacco contro Siracusa che i Cartaginesi avrebbero sferrato all’inizio del 406. Per gli Ateniesi, che offrivano alla controparte la loro rete di alleanze costruita in vista della spedizione in Sicilia del 415, si sarebbe riaperta la possibilità di affermare la propria egemonia sul versante orientale dell’isola e riguadagnare terreno nello scontro con Sparta. Tali speranze, e con esse il trattato con Cartagine, ben presto naufragano a causa dell’andamento sempre più sfavorevole per Atene della guerra del Peloponneso. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Object type | Stele; pentelic marble; (altezza x larghezza x spessore) fr. a (EM 13069): 30,30 × 29,90 × 15,20 cm; fr. b (EM 6830): 17,50 × 10,64 × 11 cm. Fragmentary, due frammenti (a, b). Il fr. a si presenta danneggiato su tutti i lati; di esso solo la parte destra preserva la superficie iscritta, viceversa staccatasi dall'altra, dalla quale tuttavia si ricava con ogni probabilità il margine sinistro dell'iscrizione. Il testo preservato coincide con la parte centrale superiore del decreto, come si desume sia dallo spazio lasciato 'in bianco' sopra la l. 1 sia dal fatto che la stessa l. 1 contiene l'incipit del prescritto.
